This edition of the Detroit Evening Report brings you critical updates impacting Metro Detroit residents, from increased immigration enforcement to local election outcomes and significant changes within the Archdiocese. We also cover innovative tools fighting disinformation and essential community support events happening soon.
Increased ICE Presence Reported in Metro Detroit
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Michigan chapter (CAIR-MI), reports a notable increase in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sightings across Metro Detroit, particularly in Wayne County. ICE has also confirmed an increase in enforcement efforts, prompting CAIR-MI to issue important advisories for the community.
Residents are urged to know their rights: always ask to see a warrant, remain silent except to request an attorney, and have emergency contacts memorized. CAIR-MI also recommends families have contingency plans in place for loved ones in case of an emergency.
Hamtramck Mayoral Race: Ballots, Lawsuits, and Certification
The Hamtramck mayoral race remains contested. The Wayne County Board of Canvassers recently opted not to count 37 ballots found after election day, leaving 120 “cured ballots” still pending. These outstanding ballots could sway the outcome.
Further, mayoral candidate Adam Alharbi has sued opponent Hamtramck City Councilman Muhith Mahmood, alleging residency fraud. The election results are expected to be certified by Tuesday, November 18. Residents should follow local reports for the final determination.
Archdiocese of Detroit Announces Major Parish Restructuring
The Archdiocese of Detroit is undergoing a two-year restructuring process impacting Southeast Michigan parishes. Citing declining Mass attendance, fewer priests, and aging buildings, Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger announced a shift from 200 parishes serving 1.5 million Catholics to a new model for today’s 900,000 worshipers.
The new “pastorate” model will group parishes under a single pastor’s team, replacing the “Families of Parishes” model. Parishioners can provide input during upcoming listening sessions at each parish. The new structure will be announced in early 2027 and implemented by July 2027. Wayne State’s Keith Center Expands AI Disinformation Tool
Wayne State University Law School’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights secured a $350,000 grant to expand VERDAD, an AI-powered tool fighting disinformation. Currently, VERDAD monitors U.S.-based ethnic radio stations for disinformation targeting Latino media, empowering voters by ensuring accurate information.
Founded by award-winning journalist Martina Guzmán, VERDAD has over 320 registered users. The grant from the John D. and Catherine T.
